Learning the WordPress Dashboard

I have just finished the first draft production of your website design using WordPress as a CMS. It is time for you, the owner, to log into the Dashboard and see the control panel. This is where you, the owner and writer, will Add New Blog Posts and maybe even a Page or two over time. The Dashboard is where I will make changes to configurations or plugin settings if there is some behavior on the website that needs to be altered or added. But right now, you will see your tools and I will walk you through how to get to know the Dashboard without causing any damage to the settings and configurations as they stand.

First, log in with the link, username and password I gave you. This is the cover page of the Dashboard. To survey the scope of website development in the WordPress paltform, a good introduction can be seen by clicking every button from top to bottom in the left hand widgets column. Each one of these pages represents somewhere that the web designer has to decide on settings and configurations, or upload Media files, or install Plugins, or adjust the Theme, or populate and drag a Widget into the right widget location.

From now on, you won’t have to see or touch most of these links in the left column widgets on the Dashboard. You only need the buttons to Add New Posts, or Add New Page. To add a new Post, you would click on the link under Posts that is named Add New. Give it a title at the top of the Edit screen. Just under that, see if you like the Permalink path is is given. If not, click Edit and change the Post Title name of the Permalink. On the right column you will see a Categories widget where you will choose which category(s) under which to publish the Post. Under that, you will open up the Post Tags and choose a few to attach to this new Post. This will enhance the SEO of your Post.

Finally, you will write your Post and Publish it by clicking the Publish button on the top right of the Edit screen. Generally, the new Post will appear at the top of the Blog Wall as the most Recent Post. If you want to move it down the list, just Edit the Publish Date to one of your choosing. It is that simple starting out. You do not need to know anything more to steer the ship out of the harbor. However, to extend the metaphor a little further, once you cruise into open sea, you will need more skills. But that will be for another time. End of Post.
